Taxable accounts may require additional attention because selling appreciated investments can create taxable gains.

Now consider the opposite case. If stocks fall sharply while bonds hold steady, the stock allocation may drop below target. Rebalancing would then require adding to stocks when they feel less comfortable to own. One misconception is that asset allocation eliminates losses. It does not.
